These guys would patiently endure (and answer) my stupid questions. This was a place where (not only could you buy components, but also) where old retired engineers, old ham radio guys and the like would sit around in rocking chairs smoking cigars, and were willing to put up with little snot-nosed kids (such as myself at the time).
I think that maybe a major driving force in this trend is the disappearance of the local electronics parts store: They take on jobs they are not equipped to do and then when they mess up BIG TIME they give the people who are depending on them to do the recording work start to question having someone from the outside do their recordings. In all honesty amatures are really messing up the whole business of recording. And if it seems like someone is just lazy, you can always answer their questions like "perhaps you should read a bit more of _ before asking questions about _"I guess I am more upset with the people who post "I just got a gig recording a full orchestra and choir and want to know where to start" If you don't know what you are doing then don't do it. I welcome their questions and am happy for young people getting into stuff like this.
And if it seems like someone is just lazy, you can always answer their questions like "perhaps you should read a bit more of _ before asking questions about _" That could lead to questions on a forum that may seem too rudimentary for a person who is being paid-but she is moving in the correct direct by training her ears, learning the equipment and rooms she is recording in, and developing a sense of how the equipment should be deployed.Ĥ0 years ago ideas where probably disseminated more by brochures, internship/apprenticeship, trial and error, possibly tonmeister schools. Beyond my training, I urged her to do some reading on the internet where so much info is available. She is just at the beginning stage of learning and did a professional job with the skills she has. One of my students, who is still at a very basic level, recorded a holiday choir concert for $100.
Personally I think that is a great thing. With all due respect Thomas, when you started out you must have received information about how to record from somewhere, no? I think the internet and websites like Gearspace have democratized the basic practices of a tonmeister.
